A useful smart contract sits inside a wider payment system. Fiat collection, customer verification, local payouts, and operational decisions still have to be handled by the appropriate off-chain services and providers.
Define the contract's responsibility
The contract can enforce a bounded settlement state machine: funding, verification, release, eligible refund, dispute, or pause. It should act on an authenticated instruction and trustworthy evidence.
Protect the bridge to the real world
An off-chain service connects provider outcomes with settlement decisions. Its identity, permissions, evidence validation, and recovery rules matter as much as the contract code.
Reconcile both sides
Bring contract events back into the application's financial and audit records. Keep uncertain outcomes under explicit control rather than automatically releasing or refunding value.
Blockchain does not remove the need for liquidity, FX, KYC/AML, secure key management, provider integrations, or contract review. The engineering opportunity is a clear, testable settlement controller with a well-defined place in the whole system.
